Sarah Paulson, the scene stealer in The People V. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story where she brilliantly played prosecutor Marcia Clark, has joined Danny Strong’s J.D. Salinger biopic Rebel In The Rye. Paulson will play Dorothy Olding, the fiercely loyal agent who believed in the young Salinger from his earliest short stories and supported him throughout his career.

She joins Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road), Kevin Spacey, Brian D’Arcy James (Spotlight, Mozart In The Jungle), Victor Garber (Sicario, Milk) and Hope Davis in the cast. Rebel In The Rye is written and will be directed by Strong from an adaptation of Kenneth Slawenski’s biography, J.D. Salinger: A Life. The film follows the legendary and secretive author through his life — from his rebellious youth to the the bloody front lines of World War II, experiencing great love and terrible loss, a life of rejection, his writing in the pages of The New Yorker, and the PTSD-fueled writer’s block that led to the birth of his iconic novel The Catcher In The Rye.

The film is financed by Black Label Media with Molly Smith, Trent Luckinbill and Thad Luckinbill producing alongside Bruce Cohen (American Beauty), Jason Shuman, and Strong. The project goes before the cameras this week in New York.

For Sarah Paulson, who portrays Marcia Clark on FX’s The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, letting go of the O.J. Simpson prosecutor was not as easy as taking off that permed wig.

In an interview with EW senior writer Tim Stack on SiriusXM, the actress admits that she “had a total sob-fest” after filming her final scene for the anthology series: “I wept like a baby.”

Paulson has previously spoken out about the extent to which she connects to the character — even picking up some of the attorney’s habits — and it was this deep understanding of Clark that led Paulson to breaking down into tears.
